Walcha in the Great War 1914-1919
This impressive publication “Walcha in the Great War – 1914-1919”, documents the contribution of local men and women during World War 1. The book contains details of those who enlisted, men and women in all forces, and includes those enlisted but unable to serve. There are short biographies of those who served, including their family connections. Every person had some link to Walcha and surrounding districts – they were either born, married or died here, or were Soldier Settlers after the war.
The opening chapters include an overview of the Australian Officers who commanded the Australian forces in the various campaigns – Gallipoli, the Middle East, France, Flanders, and the Somme, and a short history of the areas in which Walcha people were involved.
The book was compiled in collaboration by five members of the Walcha Historical Society and was launched on August 9 2014, 100 years after Britain declared war on Germany. The dedicated members – Vic Galvin, Nerida Hoy, Jillian Oppenheimer, Bob Walsh and Ruth Watson – acknowledge the assistance given to them on this four year project by family members and descendants, not only for the information provided but also for the photographs of those who served.
